The average rating of 3.1/5 for this film is pure injustice, because this movie was absolutely fantastic. Of course, there’s no denying it’s a low-budget creeper with some amateurish acting–  although, honestly, I thought the performances were surprisingly good. The cinematography isn’t exactly spectacular either, but all of these so-called flaws perfectly complement the film’s unique atmosphere.

Herschell Gordon Lewis’s style– buckets of blood and gore with shoestring budgets, bizarre storylines, and unforgettable, delightfully strange characters, results in something that feels completely dated, yet irresistibly charming. All these elements together make Two Thousand Maniacs! one of the most entertaining viewing experiences I’ve ever had. Truly an unforgettable masterpiece that deserves way more credit!

What truly elevates Two Thousand Maniacs! beyond its limitations, though, is its fantastic soundtrack. The lively Southern folk tunes and macabre sing-alongs give the film an oddly joyous energy.

The band was killer! (Literally)

I’m not the biggest fan of torture films, but this one had enough style that it wasn’t unwatchable. I thought the premise was interesting and Herschell Gordon Lewis’s direction is unmistakable. 

Definitely a one and done deal for me but I’m not mad I watched it.
