I started I Was Born, But… a couple of days ago, but quickly found my attention drifting and stopping the film before I got particularly far. But the film kept lingering in the back of my head. So today I gave it another shot, and I was utterly captivated.
This journey through Yasujirõ Ozu’s early filmography has been incredibly rewarding. I remember watching Tokyo Story as my first Ozu years ago and not getting what made his films so special. But they demand your patience and your willingness to slow down. The mundanity of his films often make the messaging subtle or at least somewhat subdued.
In the case of I Was Born, But…, this need for leaning back and letting the film take its time was as present as ever. When I first tried with the film I’d just watched both 28 Years Later films; A starkly different approach to filmmaking. I’d forgotten my patience.
A sweet and beautiful coming-of-age story, that’s as simple as it’s powerful.
