so so cool! obsessed with the fisheye lens, the outfits and dancing. love how the visuals and music are interconnected and tell a story. also all the music videos feel like films. adore the Beastie Boys, in my top 3 for hiphop artists.

Spine #100

Kinda hard to rate this one since it’s just 60+ minutes of music videos. Still a fun time nonetheless! I’ll definitely revisit this from time to time, it’s such a blast

Beastie Boys: Video Anthology
This is literally one of the coolest discs that Criterion has ever put out. Unironically, just watching the videos in sequence from, say, a playlist is not going to give you the full experience. The way that the disc opens is so exemplary of the 90s cutting edge of technology feel and aesthetic that was simply just everywhere during this time period. This is a flash-in-the-pan release that allows fans of the group to generate whatever kind of experience they want. You can change the audio tracks on the music videos, go with alternate cuts, employ the use of a thermal camera, etc.

And it all goes so hard as a result.

The Beastie Boys might have been a little “before my time” but experiencing their videos in this way with all the freedom afforded me on the Criterion Collection disc made me fucking wish I grew up listening to them instead of finding them in college when I had already been much more invested in other groups

Criterion Collection Challenge #100

THIS is truly a music video anthology nothing special, EXCEPT for the fact that the Beastie Boys rock and the robot Kaiju fight at the beginning in the song Intergalactic is so fucking cool that I gave this an extra half star. I was never a fan of the beastie boys but I think I am now.
