Top Five is an intelligent and witty exercise on the culture of celebrities and how the general audiences perceive them. The script has the humor of Chris Rock and adds to it the insightfulness and depth of dialogue of a Richard Linklater film.
At times, it feels like we are watching a Before film but set in New York with Rock as the lead, with the biggest difference being the flashbacks detailing the Ande Allen's backstory. I'm not the biggest fan of relying on flashbacks to do this, but it's true that some of them are genuinely funny.
The brief and funny encounters the characters stumble into along their journey are not there just for laughs. They add layers to Andre Allen and make us realize that there is more to him that it meets our eyes.
This might just be Chris Rock's best role, because is able to show us his funny side mixed with a bit of drama.
Oh, and here's my Top 5:
1. Kendrick Lamar2. Tyler, The Creator3. MF DOOM4. Ice Cube5. A Tribe Called Quest
