lost me somewhere around the switch from "classic locked-room detective mystery" to "bela lugosi kills people in an attempt to prove evolution via ape-blood (?)" liked the stuff preserved from the story, those dope sets and backgrounds, and ape suit.
preserved:- the debate about language from the variety of european tenants of the apartment building- woman being STUFFED IN A CHIMNEY (i wasn't expecting that)
lost:- dupin and his buddy are medical students now instead of two dudes taking opium in an abandoned house and talking philosophy- as in dracula, dupin (arguably the main character) is relegated to boyfriend status rather than the main instigator of the plot- why did they make this a mad scientist carnival talking ape movie. i mean i know why but why in a philosophical sense

The Murders in the Rue Morgue is a mostly serviceable horror film though nothing spectacular. I didn’t care much about the story, and it does suffer from some of the effects of being an early sound film. It’s only an hour long so the story is rather limited with most characters not moving past surface level characterizations.
The film does make up for some of what it’s lacking in creating a cool atmosphere. It delivers multiple great shots, interesting camera techniques, and interesting set design that gives the film an almost German expressionist impression. Still, it isn’t enough to make the film stand out.
