What a delight! I was looking for something short to watch before I back-to-backed the Gladiator movies and I figured I couldn’t go wrong with a Vincent Price Edgar Allen Poe adaptation, from knowing that and reading the description I expected a great atmospheric horror/thriller and that’s exactly what I got. Where this expanded on my previous Vincent Price experience (that being House of Wax) was with the unique filming and editing tactics, I can say confidently that I’ll probably end up liking André de Toth (director of House of Wax) more than Roger Corman as a director with Toth already giving me a 5 star in The Day of the Outlaw but I think Corman’s more out-there style is better fit for this genre and the result is a movie I actually prefer to Toth’s. It captured the atmosphere of the medieval times so well and the mix of spirituality and horror only brought out that specifically wonderful feeling, I think a lot of that can be contributed to the inventive filmmaking I mentioned but it’s also due to this script which I was shocked to be really loving through the whole movie. Great witty dialogue writing all throughout and the pace left me without a dull moment through the quick runtime, I haven’t seen too many at this point which leaves me confident in saying Richard Matheson’s screenplay here is my favorite Poe film adaptation. A perfectly effective horror thriller throughout with a mystery that kept me on my toes and an ending that satisfied me, I’ll definitely be checking out more Roger Corman Vincent Price team-ups in the near future as it just clicked for me that these movies could become some new comfort favorites of mine.
