Uh this film is not good. Like it’s kinda the same as Tekken. It has a solid story which could’ve made for a 8/10 movie based on expectation (so it wasn’t as huge of a fuck up as Tekken) but it’s severely lacking in the same areas as Tekken: The Motion Picture. Shitty voice acting, questionable music & generally not as interesting characters as any other fighting game movie I’ve seen. The only thing that makes it not as bad as Tekken is the animation actually is really well done & the sound effects actually work. But it then lacks in the areas that Tekken nailed. Like a good antagonist. I have no idea what the name of the antagonist is. & couldn’t figure it out the entire movie. They called him “Brother.” So I’m gonna day Brother is his name. So, Brother was a terrible villain. His motivation was just “ha, I’m evil. I want an item. I’m gonna use it to destroy everyone.” That we’ve seen one million times over. Fatal Fury didn’t add anything new to the premise. It didn’t take advantage of it much either. It just basically is beat for beat what’d you’d expect without too much generally making it much more interesting than most anime out there. It’s pretty obvious why it fell into obscurity in both the sense of anime & fighting games in general. SNK never really took advantage of what could’ve made their series super interesting. & this is one of the main misfires. They make up for the characters some with fight choreography but when you have two uninteresting characters who are given terrible dialogue & voice acting. You end up with a very forgettable action piece. This applies mostly with the villain. He was a weird combination of Vega from Street Fighter, a Saint Seiya character & a Gem & the holograms character all smashed into a weird feminine ball. This guy was supposed to be transcending time & laying waste to the Earth meanwhile I felt more threatened by the Teletubbies. Especially when I heard more intimidating voice acting from Bert in Sesame Street. The entire moment & spectacle was completely ruined & proved to be weightless & frankly uninteresting. I was struggling so hard not to pull out my phone that I thought I was going to have to cut my hand off. If you are a Fatal Fury fan. You’ll have a decent time. I mean Terry & the gang are all there. But at the end of the day I can’t help but feel like they completely were banking on the concept of us giving our full undivided attention just because we know who the characters are & like them from other media. That’s not how it works. Just because Superman is there. Doesn’t mean I’ll like it. If the media is shit I’ll go back & watch a good Superman movie or read a good Superman comic. I won’t be attached to the property nor want to me involved with it. That’s how this movie is. It’s some mid tier anime that isn’t exactly terrible but isn’t very good either & definitely with some touch ups in voice acting & fixing the villains design could’ve at least been decent. But instead we have a messy, less than stellar anime adaptation of an cult-classic video game franchise by SNK.
