Nice to see Vincent Price in a slasher flick, since his opinions of/feelings towards the sub-genre aren’t clear.
This isn’t the best thing in the world and it definitely isn’t my favourite Price film. I thought the film was a bit too scattered narratively, focusing on unnecessary characters, which made me not care about the story that much. Peter Cushing is severely underused in this and every character that wasn’t Paul was just annoying or boring.
Thankfully the positives outweigh the negatives of the film.
Visually, the film is perfect. I love the strong, bright colors surrounding the dark house. The contrast is really nice to look at, and so is the green lighting that appears in some parts.
The kills are decent, even though most of them are off-screen and I loved the killer’s costume.
As a Vincent Price fan, I enjoyed this because it was basically a tribute to his career, showing most of the films he’s done in the past. I just wish the overarching story was stronger.
Also 1974 was a pretty solid year for slashers.
