Is this clint Eastwood’s attempt to reconcile with his own internalized racism? His feelings of guilt surrounding the treatment of Africans by white people? If so he fails to execute this whatsoever.
Fetishization of the exotic world, a suggested “simplicity” in the life lived by Africans, and the lack of a main African character OR dialogue between two African characters make it painstakingly clear this misses the mark.
I’ll admit, there is one good moment in this film. Other than that it’s racist (in a microagression way), sexist, and fails to deliver good performances. No clue why it’s got such a high rating, I’d steer clear.
Boat scene funny though.
