R.I.P. Robert Duvall
This would make a perfect double bill with Silence. It is more kind to faith, but poses just as challenging a question. Duvall delivers an outstanding performance. The character is contradictory. He is a bad man, but he is a devout believer. Duvall fully makes you believe that each is true and never gives a reason to doubt the other, even if audiences on either side of the religious spectrum would prefer them to be mutually exclusive. You rarely see a character this fleshed out and subtly complex outside of a great novel.

Had to watch this for class. I don’t think I was supposed to find it as funny as I did. It treats Pentecostal practices more seriously than most portrayals and is highly spirited, but I was distracted by the fact that the main character beat his wife’s (who I originally thought was his daughter) affair partner (I thought he and the wife were married; they had way more chemistry and were closer in age and more involved with the children) to death on a baseball field in front of their children. The acting and color grading were both great, but the main redemptive factor is Sam. I love Sam.
