This was the most British movie I’ve ever seen, I already knew I wasn’t going to like it on my Best Picture Winner watch because I don’t like movies that won because of the spectacle and not because of the plot but this was better than the greatest show on earth and it had some moments that made me laugh and obviously Cantinflas so it wasn’t all bad. Also the costumes were so beautiful, that budget was insane but deserved. 

Basically: it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve seen; it was fine and now it’s over.

While Niven is pretty entertaining, this movie is a lot more boring than I remember last time. While there are some interesting sets, there is long stretches of nothing. Lots of fun cameos do keep you wanting to pay attention but only warrants so much praise. Though my biggest problem is how much Shirley MacLaine is wasted, so very wasted.

also, choosing to watch this as my first dietrich is like someone choosing to watch hostel as their first takashi miike or tickets to tomahawk as their first marilyn monroe. though, my beloved is such a scenestealer and it was so lovely to see her on screen after just admiring her from afar for so long.

all in all! this was fun! a feast for the eyes and ears, and so well orchestrated. i fell so deeply in love with cantinflas, and now i've got another rabbit hole to find myself falling into soon enough.
