love a movie/doc in the morning, no one can take away my whimsy

sure there’s so much you could say regarding art and how certain elements of creating are deemed inherently selfish vs when it’s right or wrong, the question of whether or not that more introspective aspect of it pays off or if it even has to “pay off” to be meaningful in some form, or if it can become something larger than itself. I don’t know that I’m necessarily too interested in that specifically right at this moment though as I think about my experience watching this again. I just know this documentary kinda changed my life one night when I was in high school, it was playing on MTV and I just happened to walk by right at the correct time. Hell, in college I did part of an audio project on Marcus and this story because it’s stuck with me in this way. Revisiting it for the first time in a couple years just to be reminded that I not only know it like the back of my hand but that sweetness and love I have for it has always been there. has always presented itself in different ways since the last watch even when I maybe didn’t realize it in the moment.
“I have them to thank for teaching me that it’s not so much the journey you’re on as it is who you go on the journey with.”
^ it sounds quite simple, maybe oftentimes regurgitated back to you, like words found etched into a celebratory $2 hallmark card but I think it can be true. Of all the experiences I’ve had going to shows, photographing others, meeting those moments I’ve desperately searched for in the past, been a familiar face or even a stranger with a camera, just witnessing, I think about those who are there beside me and those I come back to when I trade in hotel or Airbnb beds, timed showers, noisy group dinners, and old reusable water bottles attached to my personal item for what I usually hope is just a temporary stillness. you don’t demand or require anything from anyone but oh how sweet to be met with people and faces who not only understand and who can almost usher you into these experiences, or some who maybe don’t understand but still make the decision of showing up, and while not everything is or has to be a lesson..be able to learn something from others and be inspired by them. None of what I’ve just said is profound or groundbreaking, you’ve probably heard most if not all of it too many times to count by now in this lifetime in some form..but I do think it counts for something just to be reminded of it and able to latch onto especially when everything feels so uncertain, terrifying, and unknown.
“If you ever get the chance to meet up with a person like Marcus, and he offers you the most stupid sounding, irrational, impossible, illogical scheme, do it. Life is what you make it. We only get one go. Don’t waste it working. Don’t get a mortgage. Get an RV. Get a life. Get on the road.” Rest in peace Grim Grim 💐
