Scary Sexy: 6 Films by Jean Rollin #3

With each Jean Rollin viewing, I’m beginning to like these films more and more. I’m not sure if that’s due to Rollin gaining his footing in the filmmaking process since I’m watching these chronologically or if I’m just beginning to get used to his style. Either way, Grapes of Death is easily the favorite so far, especially in terms of plot and character. Whereas Lips of Blood still edges out in mystique and atmosphere, this is a much safer and straightforward, while still odd and creative, zombie flick.

Les Raisins de la Mort is a straightforward “zombie”/epidemic flick, with not many twists and turns to its narrative but some great gore and a beautiful score. And I just think it’s really funny that the apocalypse in France comes from poisoned wine of all things.

With a title as bizarre as The Grapes of Death, I really expected a whole lot more fun (or at least something interesting).

A slow burn, slow paced, meandering... Zombie flick??? Hey, I'm not a zombie person as it stands but dampening the tension did not do this film any favours. 

Plainly, The Grapes of Death is boring. It's numb. Some cool practical effects/makeup and pretty imagery just isn't enough to save such a bland stroll through horror.

Interesting final images but I can't see myself rewatching this.
