“It’s just that… I’ve spent three years making this film, and I don’t really know what it’s about,”
I think I’ve found it. I’ve found the one piece of media that encapsulates everything I love about film. This documentary captures a strange nostalgia I can’t really describe.
I didn’t enjoy Only God Forgives but this film made it so, like God, I forgive. If that film spawned this then I don’t care.
NWR isn’t perfect and he understands that. This portrayal of him is almost unflattering. He talks in detail about his failures as a director - and one of my favourite moments is the edit between him saying “this is my greatest movie, it’s better than Drive” immediately to “this is the worst film I have created, I have just wasted 6 months of our life” while he slaps himself on the head.
Nice to also get a very real perspective on people behind the scenes in the film like with Ryan Gosling. What a cutie pie.
