XAVIER FUCKING DOLAN.
First off, I went into this film with no clue what it was about. I was scrolling through Dolan's filmography and saw Kit Harrington, Natalie Portman, and Jacob Tremblay, and thought I would give it a shot.
Dolan does such an incredible job connecting story, visuals, and music. This and Mommy (2014) have the greatest needle drops I’ve ever heard. From Adele and Lana Del Ray to Florence and the Machine. With that being said, this movie is very melodramatic, but it’s exactly what a melodramatic movie should be. If you are going to be emotional. BE EMOTIONAL.
The idea of a lonely kid forming a lifeline through letters with a closeted actor? That destroys me. This film is all about idolizing someone, about needing to feel seen, about how cruel fame and the world can be. There’s something painfully serious about it.
Now this film may be too much for some people with its over-dramatic nature, but it’s also soft and completely unafraid to feel.
So shocked this is seen as Dolan's worst. But also makes me so excited for the rest of his filmography.
