The notes I took while watching The Wailing differ so wildly from my final thoughts that it feels like I watched several different films stitched together. My rating fluctuated between 1 and 5 with almost every scene. My only real criticism is the comedy. I’ve never been fond of humour in horror, and here it often felt like someone puncturing the atmosphere with a pin. Instead of relief, the comedic beats undercut the dread the film worked so hard to build. Horror thrives on momentum, and every time the tone swerved into bumbling antics or exaggerated reactions, I felt pulled out of the nightmare.

(5/31 Horror movie a day 2025)The synopsis of this story is that a stranger comes into town, and soon a sickness starts to spread across town that makes people act all bat shit crazy with rabies like symptoms killing other townsfolk. The movie's protagonist is a cop, is quite honestly very shitty and lazy at his job, that is until daughter gets afflicted by the same curse striking the town. The acting in this South Korean film is honestLY PHENOMENAL, emotions feel so raw, and the child actor does an amazing job. The character arc that is cop goes through is honestly some of the best ive ever seen in horror movie. I really love how this movie is set in the mountains and has themes of faith throughout. Im really not trying to spoil too much because I honestly believe its so much better seeing this movie for yourself. Its a modern horror masterpiece, I mean it. The third act/ending has so many twists and turns you'll be pondering on it for hours, truly a masterpiece.
