This movie has a lot of flaws. The acting apart from Mr. Sardonicus is subpar. The mixing is all over the place.
Buuuuut it’s still a fun movie. Especially fun to read about William Castle and his cinema gimmicks. I doubt there was ever a “mercy” ending to this movie.
And let’s talk about that for a second I’m not going to argue that Baron Sardonicus didn’t do anything wrong. Extorting your wife and abusing your servants is definitely not cool but it’s not absolute evil incarnate. He was a man horribly disfigured and in extreme mental anguish. As soon as he was cured he was like “oh thanks, yeah my wife who doesn’t love me anymore? You can just leave. Yeah I don’t care, it’s cool you can just go.” While the “protagonist” Dr Sir Robert admitted he just killed dogs for no reason. “It was all an elaborate scheme to trick Sardonicus to curing himself.” This dude really just poisoned numerous dogs for a devious contrivance that doesn’t even work!
