No Rain.
Banjo Donkey-Boy-Athon: The Return Film #15
You are all wrong and stupid. Genuinely how is this the lowest rated of all the Romero zombie films, this is great. Most definitely the closest successor to Day of the Dead, which saying that’ll make people mad but it’s true. People who can’t get along regardless of their common enemy, even through death, forever bound to conflict until a bullet is lodged in their skull. The film looks great, even though people say it doesn’t, for some stupid reason. Well, their problem seems to be with the CGI but it never bothered me at all. That final shot? I’ve added it here as a backdrop and I’m hoping it comes quick. So good. Unfortunately it’s not great quality since there’s so few stills of this film out there. I’ll take what I can get I suppose. These bunch of characters are much more interesting than anyone in Land or especially Diary, like way better than Diary, anything is better than **Diary. **
Loved how it all came together in the end, the long-running feud between the families erupting in the juiciest gore you’ll see, all thanks to their stubbornness and differences. Again, similarly to Day of the Dead. Just a western where the only sand is that of the beach surrounding the island, the climax demanding an Ennio Morricone score. Unlike the stupid, God, so fucking stupid narration in Diary, I really loved the narration here. It works. The opening and ending. Great stuff. I just kind of loved this one, Banjo was right.
Reminded me a lot of the side missions in Borderlands 2 with the feud between the Irish and the rednecks, except here there’s zombies and everyone’s just Irish, so Irish.
This concludes the Romero zombie flicks, so let’s rank ‘em. Only one I’m due for a rewatch on is Dawn of the Dead, so take that placement with a grain of salt. Need to dust off my DVD and see if my thoughts change, until then, this is it.

O Infeliz declínio de George Romero...
Me entristece ver que a última obra lançada pelo diretor tenha sido um low budget tão trash e non-sense que vai contra o que já havia feito antes (tornando a sua crítica social superficial e dando lugar a um humor quebrado e a uma trama desinteressante), ainda consigo apreciar a sua direção criativa em alguns momentos, mas o fator comédia no longa se estende mais do que deveria, se sobressaindo em relação ao drama proposto, além do excesso de uso de efeitos digitais que influenciam na sua imersão, o que é irônico, já que os efeitos práticos de gore são muito bem feitos (assim como eram nos seus filmes clássicos) então não consigo entender a escolha do diretor em usar de forma desenfreada os efeitos digitais (além de aparentarem estarem inacabados), a sua crítica social aqui se dá muito mais em uma disputa de ideias entre dois rednecks, que consiste em basicamente a crença em uma suposta cura a longo prazo (ou na insistência em forçar os zumbis a trocarem a carne humana pela carne animal) em oposto a isso temos a visão de outro personagem que enxerga nessas criaturas nada além de monstros, e que a morte seria um favor a quem foram em vida, aquele velho conflito de mentalidades que levam a destruição mútua (sobre como mesmo em um cenário apocalíptico, a humanidade tende a discordar e rivalizar entre si), além de existirem vários diálogos que reforçam uma visão religiosa nesse filme em específico, mas o tom e o ritmo acabam tornando esses momentos não intencionalmente cômicos, é um filme em que vemos o nítido desgaste mental e físico do diretor influenciando diretamente a sua obra, alguns temas como a perca da fé diante o governo são bons tópicos que nunca se desenvolvem, tornando a experiência cansativa, e fazendo a crítica social se perder em meio a diálogos deploráveis e vergonhosos, talvez tudo isso tenha sido uma última revolta do diretor em perceber o descaso da indústria com o seu nome (que havia criado um gênero bastante popular até meados dos anos 2010), acredito que a experiência de assistir a esse filme com amigos melhore de alguma forma, a comédia é garantida em alguns momentos

I finally finished the of the dead series wooooo!
This one is better than Diary of the Dead, but not by much I’ll be honest. The practical effects greatly outshine the CGI ones. The characters had some random motivations that did not make sense. Also Rodrick Heffley was also in this one?? This movie is a trip. However, I did like the feud between the two families on the island; both in terms of their moral dilemma and the actual fight scenes. That in and of itself carried the whole movie for me. I will probably never watch it again despite it being George A. Romeo’s last work. RIP zombie king.
I am glad I finished all of his movies even though some of them took me several attempts. It is cool to see how concepts start and change over time. While I appreciate Romero’s abilities to come up with new social commentary every time and try to make something new, it definitely makes me appreciate the first three over the last three.
