I originally found it thanks to Tobey’s cameo, but pressed play for the plot and the decade’s ambience that I love so much. I’d never even heard of this film before, none of my friends had seen it either; which made it feel like discovering a hidden gem.

And the soundtrack: Radiohead, Hole, Soundgarden, even Gwar. It’s as iconic as it sounds.

Reese Witherspoon was such a joy to watch; I recognized her instantly from Legally Blonde. She and Stephen Dorff had surprising chemistry, the kind that makes you root for every shared glance. Their scenes together were genuinely cute.

I don’t know why this movie is so overlooked, but I’m glad I found it. And it’s exactly what I wanted from a 90s time capsule.

However, it’s wild how relevant its take on media obsession still feels today. Maybe that’s why it hit harder than I expected.

What an odd movie…

There are these moments of dialog where I think the movie is about to get good, and then they mess it up with a cringe line or an odd acting choice. It’s a cool premise, I’m not gonna lie, but it feels so disingenuous a majority of the time. It’s a satire, or at least I think it’s supposed to be, but it simply doesn’t juggle the serious moments with the comedic moments very well.
