Images is a horrifyingly beautiful phycological thriller that never lets down its mind bending suspense. Robert Altman manages to portray a certain eeriness that I’ve never felt from film prior to now. As an audience we are left to put the pieces of the puzzle together, which is most literally what happened as the start of the credits rolled.
I’m not quite sure my internal puzzle for images is complete yet, but that’s almost what makes it such a brilliant phycological film. As Cathryn spirals, we as an audience feel disoriented; but when Cathryn feels present, Altman manages to make us feel we might have figured this bloody mess out with her.

***Notes:
-The cinematography is excellent, maybe his most polished yet even though I prefer McCabe and Mrs. Miller’s visually due to setting.
-John Williams score is underrated, and a complete eerie nightmare due to his wonderful music.
- acting is exquisite, he continues down this ensemble path of hiring the same trustworthy actors. Entire cast gives worthwhile performances.
-the openness of the landscape adds a lot to the depth of the fear for me. It always felt as anything could happen and it would makes since.
-the child story has a lot of tie ins to the actual mystery, yet I don’t think I’ve put my finger on it exactly.
-the long zooms, the continued close ups of the chimes, the camera, it’s all a genuine freak fest paired together.
- Altman is really just impressive to me, not a single film has felt like anything he didn’t want to go all in on. These are pieces of art, not box office missiles.
