Lowkey love the use of silence in this movie, feels like they really understood saying nothing really created tension and made for a much better viewing experience. Some great scary scenes and special effects

The premise is another "Ghost hunter show where they've been faking everything finds a real haunting" movie, but I don't know if the people who made this one have ever actually seen a paranormal investigation show because this is nothing like that. Their "show" is two guys armed only with a single EMF meter (that looks nothing like any EMF meter I've ever seen) walking about and talking about the room they're in. The camera quality is terrible and apparently they never sprung for a digital camera because they "run out of tape" at one point and have to go get another. There are no fixed cameras, motion sensors, any of the things that every single paranormal show has. They don't try to communicate with the spirits beyond asking them to show themselves and they only just happen to see things. We see most things through the camera of a guy making a behind the scenes documentary about the show and his camera is way better quality, gets better "evidence", and he's the only one who seems to be paying any attention to his surroundings. Aside from all that, Hollows Grove just isn't well made: the effects suck, the characters are boring, and the dialog from the guy holding the camera is clearly all ADR. Why is everyone else on screen being recorded through the on set mics, but the voice we should be able to hear most clearly is obviously not? The story isn't exactly novel at this point and I'm not sure that anyone making this film is a fan of the paranormal shit as the plot doesn't really make sense. This is more of a compilation of ghost things than a coherent story of a haunted location. We just jump from one clichè ghost scene to another and none of them feel related. We hear all kinds of very loud sounds from the third floor: running footsteps, kids laughing and screaming, moaning, music, and what sounds like a recording of a crowded subway car. Even in the fakest ghost shows, they never hear anything this bold and these characters barely react. No one is acknowledging what sounds like a large Wiggles concert happening ten feet above their heads. They get real excited to capture footage of cockroaches in a kitchen cupboard, but don't seem to concerned with actual apparitions, creepy drawings on the walls, or things moving on their own. Zak Bagans flips the fuck out over a speck of dust floating in front of thr camera and then declares the location a literal portal to Hell. These dudes hear kids laughing and see a floating head on their thermal and are very nonchalant about it and are more concerned with banging the producer. Ghosts aren't real, so every movie is free to write their own rules for how ghosts work, but Hollows Grove doesn't even bother. They just brainstormed a bunch of spooky things and jammed them all in to a movie with no care or consideration for consistency or narrative. All I can really give it credit for is having mostly okay acting.
