Yugoslavian and 90s Serbian Cinema always gives off the weirdest vibes. The themes are so insanely disturbing while the tone is weirdly comedic. Obviously Fellini is a big influence on many of these films but they have a distinct flair to them which no other region of the world can match. The music is another thing that spices up these films, Balkan folk music is honestly some of the best music ever but usually doesn’t fit somber and sad films which might be an explanation for the tones of these films. If this film was American, or Scandinavian, this film would probably be more melodramatic and very serious, but this is able to be both serious and unserious which I really admire - this film tackles the schism between Serbians and Bosnians, Orthodox Christians vs Muslims... Like the Bosnian War basically JUST ended when this movie was produced and Srebrenica happened the previous year. Idk what to think about that, its fucking wild!
Like it almost comes off as distasteful.. but somehow not.. It helps that its brilliantly crafted with amazing cinematography, great framing and blocking. The dialogue is engaging and the pacing is immaculate. This is such a well made film and above else really fascinating. Crazy movie and I highly recommend checking it out.
