“All I can tell you is it will be sensational”
Horny ass movie. Bava knows how to stay with an image and just revel in it without making it feel like it’s overstaying its welcome. The bar scene in this thing is so psychedelic, actually a perfect sequence, encapsulates so many of Mario’s ideas brilliantly. And Diabolik is so sexy - Marisa Mell is always the focus of the film gaze, whether it be when she’s deliberately seducing someone or just with her lover. The initial shower scene is very good at setting the stage for this and also the film’s loose structure, and how it would much rather just spend time with its schemes and characters than its fuckass plot. Everything involving Eva and Diabolik is absolutely marvellous and then the rest is mostly just filler. Not really, but it is supbar. It is a testament to the fact that style over substance really is superior as long as you have style. Could have just been an entire movie of the two leads doing shit. Goes on the list of movies I want to remake in the future, along with Ornamental Hairpin and The Doll.
