Very atmospheric. Louis Hayward gives a great performance. The plot gets a little slow at times and lacks suspense. It's still worth watching but one of the not as good Fritz Lang films.

Drenched in shadowed lighting and tight, blocked, claustrophobic framing, Fritz Lang’s House By The River has all the technical components of a hard-hitting, melodramatic noir. But it’s straightforward, often placid narrative holds it back from being one of those what time demands you see. 

Made on little to no money, with no stars, it’s hard not to be impressed by what Lang can do with so little, the whole sequence on the river at the beginning is absolutely stunning and is so provocative - as many of the ‘action’ scenes are… but the reliance on Noir tropes to build the narrative makes you just step out of it a little too far, especially as you are meant to believe what these people are saying is their truth when it feels like it’s being read from a script. 

The good outweighs the bad, but the bad is still quite pungent.

A lot I really like about this even if it doesn't coalesce together as well as I'd like. The atmosphere is gorgeous, but it's the main character's despicable arrogance that really makes this film engaging and enraging. The tension of "how is this guy gonna get away with it or how is this going to blow up in his face?" that kinda reminds me of a Tom Ripley story or the villain in Hitchcock's Frenzy. Also Louis Hayward kinda looks like Anthony Scaramucci to me sometimes, and thay fact amuses me greatly.
