Maud Bailey, a brilliant English academic, is researching the life and work of poet Christabel La Motte. Roland Michell is an American scholar in London to study Randolph Henry Ash, now best-known for a collection of poems dedicated to his wife. When Maud and Roland discover a cache of love letters that appear to be from Ash to La Motte, they follow a trail of clues across England, echoing the journey of the couple over a century earlier.

Possession
i love the book too much to judge this fairly.

but i will say it’s always interesting to see casting choices for book-to-film adaptations.. because not once while reading it did i ever imagine anyone remotely resembling aaron eckhart as a hesitant, repressed, and suffering scholar.

“he was a compact, clearcut man, with precise features, a lot of very soft black hair, and thoughtful dark brown eyes. he had a look of wariness, which could change when he felt relaxed or happy, which was not often in these difficult days…” 🧐

Possession
Nope! Very not good. I don’t want to write sentences because I am very tired so... here’s a list of bad things about Possession:

- Aaron Eckhart is crazy miscast. Lol it’s hilarious that he plays a scholar of Victorian poetry. Also Roland is supposed to be average looking?

- The book is a 10/10 so it’s hard to adapt but they didn’t even add half the scenes???

- It’s too long at 100 minutes.

- No chemistry between either couples. Like no attempt at all.

- The Ash/Christabel love scenes made me so uncomfortable!!

- No visual appeal. Nothing lush or sumptuous about the Victorian scenes.

- Doesn’t flip between time periods well.

- All around lazy!
