A heist thriller with a dry sense of humour, propelled though a quirky odd couple pairing of Nic Cage and Elijah Wood.
Cage is a police lieutenant working in police evidence management along with younger sergeant Frodo. The workforce is mostly apathetic but Cage seems to want to do some good, roping in Frodo to help him solve a drug running operation, in particular via accessing their vault - but does Cage have more affluent aspirations or does he just want a friend?
The Trust doesn’t do a lot to spell out the motives of its characters, in particular Cage who is a mostly a well meaning yet socially awkward fellow. There is no shock reveal just a gradual kind of peeling away to the core of the character intention which is an appealing approach yet the feels a little mismatched, the stakeout scenes read over the top when compared to the heist outcome. I appreciate that the puzzle here is not so much the heist, but the people who are perpetrating it.
Directed by brothers Ben and Alex Brewer, Ben would alter work with Cage again on Arcadian.
