The camera work in this movie is insanely good, the first person shots are so cool! The effects were so ahead of their time, and the first transition scene is amazing!
A lot of older horror movies fail to up hold their scariness nowadays, but I’d argue that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde manages to still be incredibly creepy even by today’s standards. Hyde himself is very scary because he’s very real. He’s the embodiment of all that’s wrong with Jekyll, and is a manifestation of abuse. I think it can also be a representation of Jekyll’s repressed desires. He’s very lustful towards Ivy, even though he is engaged, and doesn’t stop her when she is kissing him, because even though he does love his fiancé, he’s still attracted to Ivy and wants her. Hyde took that and then exploited, and abused her. I’d say Jekyll and Hyde represent a very scary reality of a lot of men’s minds, and that’s what makes them so terrifying compared to other monsters.
I haven’t read the book yet, I have it I just haven’t read it yet, so as far as book accuracy goes I have no idea. I’m sure it’s not 100% accurate because most movies adapted from books in this era weren’t, due to limited time, but hopefully it’s still somewhat accurate.
Overall, I really enjoyed this film, and it’s definitely one of the great pre-code horror movies. Also the acting is amazing!
