❝Part of your life, you give me a moment. Me sure in spite of the past, and in spite of the future. This tick of our lifetime is one moment you love me.❞

I've had Chinese Box in my watchlist for so long, and after finally watching it I have some mixed thoughts; on one hand, it's beautifully shot and the concept is definitely there, but on the other hand the plot is a little frustrating and it does become aimless in certain areas. It's got a very romantic and bittersweet sentimentality at its core, which turns almost cloying after a while. Jeremy Irons gives a brilliant performance in the lead role as John, and the supporting cast, which includes the legendary actresses Gong Li and Maggie Cheung, are also pretty great. With that being said, though I wouldn't necessarily watch this again, I think it's a good film, and worth giving a go just for Irons' acting.

a movie starring gong li and maggie cheung should get automatically at least 4 stars from me so what happened??
there’s too much happening and it still manages to be boring and gong li is criminally underused. maggie cheung’s character is the only interesting thing in this whole movie (and the marlene dietrich scene ofc)
