I recently watched a video of Charlie Rose asking Ian McKellan, “Do you have specific areas that you think need work?” McKellan immediately responds with, “Yeah. Well, to act as well as Brendan Fraser.”
Not as wild of a statement if he was talking about Oscar-winning The Whale Fraser, but this interview was even pre-Mummy. I had to see what he was talking about. If I watched this having never seen that interview, I would say that McKellan was great and Fraser was fine, but I was looking for that naturalism and “truthful bewilderment” that McKellan spoke of, and it is undeniably there. How neat for the older actor to express admiration for his eye candy/Frankenstein lookalike costar.
