Mondo Trasho serves audio mix tape with a video accompaniment of glamorous filth.
Mary Vivian Pearce visits a local park where a pervert sucks on her toes, leading to an orgasmic Cinderella dream fantasy, followed by Mary accidentally being run over by Divine who is herself fantasising about a nude hitchhiker. After a brief sojourn to undertake fashion shoplifting, a laundromat visitation from the Virgin Mary and enforced asylum at a home for the mentally unwell (including an old timey dancing topless Mink Stole), Divine finally seeks help for her victim, whose limbs are replaced with chicken feet. Eventually both Divine and Mary Vivian Pearce die a pool of filth while pigs wander by.
With only very minimal dialogue, the musical accompaniment (none of which has been legally licenced) acts as an inner monologue for the characters with often hilarious results. Not only are their at least three songs from future Tarantino soundtracks, but the near 15 minute to sucking sequence we sure indicate a bootleg copy of this was in high rotation in the video archives back office.
In some ways this is a pre-cursor to TikTok with its use of relevant sound and lyric cues to accompany visual imagery, it even has the original ‘Oh no, Oh no, Oh no no no’ sound cue from the Shangri-las used several times - John Waters out here creating viral vids 37 years before TikTok even existed.
I love the Lo-fi glam aesthetic of it all, especially Divine’s frequent adjustments of her ill fitting booty shorts.
