Such a powerful film. I loved the variety of characters in this story. It added so many different layers. I could go on and on about this but for the sake of this review I will just go over a few. For example in this story you had Marina who viewed life as filth and terrible and because of that mindset she was willing to portray her fellow countryman. Then there was Manfredi who endured horrifying tortures and death and still did not portray his fellow countrymen. And even the German who asked why the Germans were even fighting when he to realized that Germans weren’t a superior race. All these different characters added so many layers to the story. There were some really beautiful lines. When Francisco was telling Pina to not be afraid as this was a conflict for freedom and justice for their children after them. Beautiful! My favorite line though was when the Priest died he ended his life by saying “It is easy to die a good death it is harder to live a good life”. My goodness what a quote and so true. This film was beautiful. It showed the evil of Nazis. It showed what courage and honor can do to a man and what selfishness and depression can bring on mankind. Such a beautiful film. I do feel like the way the film brought everything thing and wrapped up the film was a bit abrupt. Maybe I watched it wrong but it felt that way. But a beautiful film that displayed the evil of Nazis and the courage of those who resisted their evil regime.

Italian NeoRealism’s most iconic movie for sure. 1 hour and a half of pure scenery shots that serve as a background for a story of resistance and defiance. Truly a masterpiece, Rossellini is an amazing director.

One of the films that started the neorealist movement in Italy. A product of anger and suffering faced by Italy in the final days of the war. I didn't know that germany took control of Italy which was its ally.
My first rossellini film and glad I started with this masterpiece. This film tries to give you lot of strong messages but does it in a very simple way. This film is not beautiful but it's powerful.
