A delightful time, though It’s clear that there was more potential here than properly utilised. I will say though that I found two parts of this movie very interesting. Firstly, Robert’s decision to lose everything over a single public lashing seems foolish at first but I think it’s quite interesting what it represents for his character. This land belonged to his ancestors, and he’s lived there his whole life and he wants Normans and Saxons to live in peace, yet draws the line at compromising his dignity and so the dignity of his people for it. A single lashing may be practically meaningless and will likely fade in time, yet the scar of forfeiting his heritage to someone who has no rights to the land is not something he’s willing to bear. 

Secondly, I find the characterisation of the Baron very interesting. He’s a clear example of how to do redeemable antagonists right, because we are both given the good and the bad in equal measure. He respects Robert and likes him enough to share him his past, and yet also is obsessive over material things and is easily broken by higher authority. He wants peace, but to achieve it he must put down his sword and his pride. 

This movie has some pretty major flaws, however. Especially since the Prince John issue is never resolved, and also because while I like what this film is trying to say it’s sometimes too shallow or not obvious about its message. Nonetheless, a good time with a handful of great aspects in the mix.
