i loved everything about this film, and this is definitely my type of film.
this is a grindhouse classic, and one of the best of its kind. i’m a massive fan of the video nasties, and this has to be one of my favourites so far. it’s full out on the horror and to some may seem extreme, it shows the really sleazy grim atmosphere of the gore and exploration from these early splatter flicks. i love the detective part of the film, or the more ‘giallo’ side of horror. it’s a mystery about a psychologist and police officer as they hunt this donald duck esque killer: it’s a really good example of the ‘whodunit’ trope and while it may be predictable to a more experienced horror fan, it’s still fun nonetheless. the subgenre are also amazing - giallo, slasher and splatter all in one film (3 of my favourite subgenres of horror) so that alone makes it hard for me to hate this movie. it has beautiful atmospheric film making, despite its reputation it had intense set pieces, as it uses a hostile environment to create a genuinely unsettling mood. this movie was banned for over 2 decades due to its grin depravity, it’s an amazing example of extreme cinema that is ahead of its time : with more gore being really prevalent today in horror movies. the gore is realistic, and even extreme but that was just my favourite part of the movie, the practical effects are immaculate and the close ups really make it even more intense, the kills scenes are really effective and i’ve never seen something like these deaths before! it can be seen as a little misogynistic, as a bunch of sex workers get slashed but i think it’s just great commentary on society’s violence on women, especially ones who are lower down such as prostitutes. the plot points can be absurd, and it can seem a little uneven as the acting isn’t the greatest in the world, as much as i love a good campy slasher i also love these : slashers with a bleak tone, a sense of nihilistic realism and grim, with unlikable characters are constant blood shed.
