What the Scanners franchise needed by this point was a change of pace. Scanners III: The Takeover had retread similar ground to the first one — corporate espionage once again, though this time it was much more over the top and comedic (and all the better for it). Still, the films were starting to blur together.
How do you change up a franchise that was beginning to grow a bit stale? Ooh I know! Let's make one of the scanners a cop with a tragic past, tasked with hunting down a freaky scientist who, alongside his beautiful goth tarot reader assistant, kidnap and brainwash civilians into killing officers. Yeah that sounds good!
Scanner Cop is a gritty crime thriller that veers into psychological horror just as much as it does action, with a consistently dark tone that works the entire time. Doesn't overly indulge in the explosive body horror, but when it does, you feel it right in the loins. The sequence where our lead fella scans into Zena's mind is downright one of the freakiest moments in all of horror — a sentence I did not expect to say about the fourth Scanners movie. This might be better than the OG.
