I think this film encapsulates how different people cope with grief and trauma really well. On one side, we could see how Lois cope through being avoidant, how she wouldn’t even leave her house after that tragedy. And we see how this grief could create problems and destroy relationships: with how Doug turns to give most of his care towards something else (like Vivian and Mallory), rather than addressing things with his wife.
l think that’s where Mallory’s role really plays in this film, in which she acts as like the barrier between their relationship and their shared grief. The way both Doug and Lois saw and treated her like their own child, together with all of the things they wished they had done and would’ve done if their daughter was still alive. But the beauty of this film is truly them realizing that Mallory is not their daughter and will never be. And it’s also how this realization led to them to finally being able to accept and let go, to finally being able to be changed for the better. The ending shows this incredibly well.
This film is truly very underrated even though I think Kristen Stewart’s acting is so good here. And I don’t get people that says this is a boring film, ‘cause the drama is actually very engaging. Either ways this is very worth it to watch!
