“Human beings really know how to be pathetic when they try to, don’t they?”
I’d be lying if I said I’d rewatched this for any other reason than seeing one of my favourite scenes ever again. The whole film feels like it’s building towards Fonda’s introduction and the whole world stops whenever she speaks. The moment where the camera moves to Fonda’s hand on Keitel’s face and you see her age, almost too intimately, is just perfection. It brings everything this strange, muddled film is trying to say into sharp relief. I’m never going to truly love Youth but I will always love that scene.
