how my gap year got me feeling

A 17 year old Todd Haynes made this with the wand of a wizard and genius mind of a young auteur. The immeasurable pain and agony of being alone. Fracturing and melting into a bloody red dripping tetrahedron of pain to the chest. The lack of human warmth does that to a man, much less a boy. So strong and willful in the way it picks you up and sweeps you away. The shots reek of nostalgia for a better day, weeping upon the past. Really really heartbreaking but equally enamoring camera work. Red is all I see.

Making its way through a month full of blood, screams and spooks comes a retrospective of one of my favorite filmmakers: Todd Haynes, starting with his earlier work - The Suicide, a short film of rather tragic nature he made at the tender age of 17 years. A prolific career would spring from here on and his artistic sensibility can be traced back to this. Really not as amateurish or gauche as one would expect.
