The visual appeal and performances are here, but in a way I’m glad this was the last Hammer Frankenstein film, they definitely had ran out of things to say, Cushing is masterful as usual, but the film barely did enough for me to care, it’s a shame

Frankenstein ends on a solid enough note! This time the Baron is doing experiments on a bunch of prison inmates. The monster is pretty monstrous looking. There was some pretty solid gore and a really sad ending for the monster. I wish there was a more solid ending to the Baron’s story, but it kind of seems like they said it up for another sequel. Over all a solid bunch of Frankenstein movies. Definitely didn’t have enough juice for so many movies but there were some pretty good ones jammed in there. They were definitely cheep production focused on cheep thrills. Not really serious horror movies so you just gotta take the camp with the horrors. Peter Cushing definitely a Frankenstein icon!

There’s a poetic sense in the ending of this movie after The Monster has been destroyed that Frankenstein just moves on and plans to make another monster. Like no matter what events happen he just keeps continuing

So while it was probably sequel bait at the time, as the now last Hammer Frankenstein movie, It feels poignant. This is a series that has never cared about the continuity in the movies and just keeps going on regardless. 

Peter Cushing returns gracefully as Frankenstein after being painfully absent from the last instalment. And thank god. Because he’s always the best part of these movies. After marathoning the Universal Frankenstein movies I do hunger for more development from The Monster but that’s not what this series is. This is Cushing as The Evil Dr. Frankenstein’s show. And he commands it.
