Fleischer went towards more modern stories before Disney ever did. While Walt and crew were working on and releasing Dumbo, the story of an elephant who learns to fly, Max and Dave Flesicher were hard at work with distancing themselves away from fairy tales with Mr. Bug Goes to Town. In a way that Dumbo is timeless story-wise, Mr. Bug is itself timeless message-wise. A lot of it holds up pretty well, but mainly in the main antagonist of Mr. Beetle - a rich, self-centered bug who does not care that the thing affecting all the other bugs will soon affect him as well. If you presented this film today, you could easily pass this as a message on climate change and the wealthy and it would make sense. It’s a shame this film got shuttered at the box office and ruined the Fleischer run - I would have liked to see where they went from here.
