Another comfort film! Marion Davies does it again! I think admittedly I do prefer The Patsy but again Marion Davies time and time again proved that she was more than this alleged gold digger who used Hearst to fulfill her movie ambitions. Marion actually had talent and it really frustrates me that people think otherwise which annoys me a lot. Apparently the film is based on Gloria Swanson and Mae Murray. Admittedly I don't know much about Mae Murray, but I definitely see the Gloria Swanson influence on the role. Swanson was an actress with career ambitions to become a great actress, and we know in hindsight she definitely did achieve that status. But in the early days she did slapstick comedy shorts for Mack Sennett, she detested them. Just in the same way Marion's Peggy Pepper, is an actress who aspires to make "art" and detests the comedies she does. Her comedic acts are so funny just because she is so serious. Exactly with Swanson. The film is a major satire of the industry! It also kinda pokes fun at how the industry disdains comedy, something it still holds today! Peggy Pepper says comedies aren't artistic and stuff but that's so wrong! Ironically she's saying that in one of the best made comedies of the era. It's also fascinating to see the cameo appearances. We see John Gilbert at the banquet as well as driving outside his film studio. It's crazy to see Elinor Glyn. Mae Murray popped up, so did Louella Parsons and Norma Talmadge. in the banquet scene it was so funny how she was casually speaking to Douglas Fairbanks. The Charlie Chaplin scene was iconic af as she didn't even realise who he is. A self referential moment came when Peggy Pepper played by Marion Davies met Marion Davies! Anyways Marion is just wonderful, her comedic charm delights the screen, she is so underrated! And William Haines is great too! Another King Vidor classic!
