My first Ernst Lubitsch picture, The Smiling Lieutenant, is a somewhat mixed bag. It’s a quaint little film, but in all honesty I didn’t care much for it.
Maurice Chevalier is just so unbelievably smug. Why? The chemistry between Colbert and Hopkins was far more believable. Nevertheless, it’s a fun film, and it did have me chuckling on a few occasions.
While I wasn’t utterly engulfed in the film and its characters, it was still a fun introduction to Lubitsch’ work. I’m excited to see his more critically acclaimed films.
