Ichikawa is one of those directors that is really hard to stumble upon when watching film as he has a very distinct niche in the Japanese film market from a long time ago, but criterion again a great job including his work in their collection. Fires on the plain is a very special japanese outlook of the world war aftermath that is masterfully put together. Fires on the plain is one of two films he did on this time period that I watching and while it is powerful I think this film sets the groundwork of tragedy that the Burmese Harp his next film really stands upon.

A common description I use in a lot of war movies that show the “true” horrors of war, but this one is a little more poignant as it shows a time of a war when defeat is inevitable and almost welcomed. The portrayal of such soldiers suffering the harsh moments of war in between fighting to some extremes is intense and well done. The performances as a whole are also well done. Intense
