A stunningly expansive film, spanning multiple generations and continents. Any work this epic necessarily contains multitudes of interesting ideas: love, personal growth, familial relations, loyalty, and patriotism are all on display here. Unfortunately, this also makes the storytelling somewhat haggered; for a film that depicts a world war, it is quite slow. And this is aside from my main critique of the movie, which is that it essentially turns into a French war propaganda film for 30 minutes. (Reasonable people can interpret that section of the movie to be a "war is Hell" montage--I never claimed to be reasonable!)
Where the film emphatically succeeds, though, are in its visual storytelling--it is an absolute insult to refer to this as "primitive cinema."
