As I was watching this, I simply couldn't understand at first some plot points but after it's end almost everything were placed where it should have been set besides a few.
My biggest question was why did the writer had beasts and humans? Ever since humans started to percieve reality with sapeince they've become something other than animals. If every human would be asked about what makes us different from them, almost every anwser would be related to our segregation from animals. This film approached this topic with a pretty consistent anomalia among humans. Ignorance. Ignorance about yourself ,others etc.
What is that darkness inside humans? As I said, humans differ from animals because we as species neglecting and neglected what were given to us from the start. In that sense every human has ignorance towards their real nature. Which after a large stack of atrocities, would collapse, resulting in a highly vulnerable and sensible (lost)sense of the self, almost like an animal. There are multiple occurances like this in regular human behavior (but not like this super-extreme one). That was the reason behind the pseudo-boar guy's whale form too.
Why some beasts were able to resurrect into a god? I don't know
Why swords were forbidden to draw? I don't know
Why Ren's father was so left out of the film? I don't know
Why Ren's father left his family? I don't know
Maybe I simply didn't pay attention to those in the film, but I think some of them weren't explained. Considering it's theme, it's a pretty good film, with decent animation and with a well unfolded narrative. I really liked the Moby Dick reference. I think this film should be in more conversations as a perfect 8/10 animated film.
