Breath of fresh air after watching so many bad movies for this challenge. Why is this basically just 1960s mostly white Do The Right Thing. When Robert Redford climbs out of the river or whatever and collapses on the grass in a patch of sun and he looks like a fallen angel like if you agree. I do agree that he never should have played a Texan though sorry it just doesn’t fit.
Marlon Brando, as usual, is absolutely fantastic (an actor like no other, I adore the part where he announces a murder and someone asks “do you think he was killed?” and he goes ”………yea.”), Jane Fonda, as usual, is the hottest woman I’ve ever seen. Robert Duvall is also stellar and strangely very sexy. If you have a type of any sort (in white people) they are in this movie. Couple weird pedo moments as is expected of this sort of film. I really really like the cinematography in this actually I can’t quite put a finger on it there’s this lovely vignette that makes everything look really sleepy, the score is incredible, the acting is compelling even from really insignificant side characters which I think helps to give it a really real feel. Normally I hate when films do the whole soap opera thing, I really hated every moment of twin peaks that didn’t focus on Laura Palmer for example, but I think it works here and I found myself actually compelled. I do agree with the common consensus of this being way too damn long—I get that the play was too but Jesus Christ bruh sometimes you gotta make the screenplay a little shorter. I also think the quieter moments of racial juxtaposition say a lot more than the louder moments of racial discrimination, like at Val Rogers’ party where the guests are all white and the chefs are black. Just a lot of really intriguing stuff.
So yes. Bring back the old southern accent!
