Mike Locken is one of the principal members of a group of freelance spies. A significant portion of their work is for the CIA, and while on a case for them one of his friends turns on him and shoots him in the elbow and knee. His assignment, to protect someone, goes down in flames. He is nearly crippled, but with braces is able to again become mobile. For revenge as much as anything else, Mike goes after his ex-friend.

If you think at all about the motivations of some of the characters in this, namely Duval and and their boss Collis, you'll melt your own brain. Like seriously I dont get it, Duval says he's retiring but then he's just continuing to work, just on a different side?! But it isn't a different side, its the same boss but he's just pitting two guys against each other on a job, giving them diametrically opposite goals. Ok and why though?! It doesn't make a lick of sense.
Neither does the story... its like the director just fucking loves ninjas so he wants them in his movie... but he's also rah rah America first, so he spends the whole movie belittling the practice and culture.
I asked why a lot during the music, if it's not obvious. What I didn't have a problem was that film stock. Holey moley thanks MGM, UA and Amazon. You're tech gurus really putting in work in the lab transferring these old negatives to digital. That's some crisp shit!

First fifteen minutes are perfect because Caan and Duvall on screen together is an electric duo that had me buying up all the stock in this film, but that goes away as fast as it comes and becomes a disjointed mess of a movie that never really settles into a genre or even a strong plot direction. The violence is disappointingly weak. Caan does the best he can with this and it turns out an ok movie because of him.
