This one was a pleasant surprise. I went into it totally blind - didn't read the synopsis or anything, just saw Matthew McConaughey on the cover and thought, yeah, that's the one. I was kinda in that mood where you're scrolling through your watchlist for two hours trying to pick something? Yeah, not this time. I just clicked it and went for it
And honestly, I'm so glad I did. At first glance I thought it was gonna be some kind of survival movie based on the poster. Turns out it's literally a whole history lesson about the Civil War that I did not see coming. Now, full disclosure: I don't really know that much about U.S. history. Like, I'm not gonna pretend I do. But I love war movies - they're literally my favorite genre - so getting McConaughey in a Civil War setting was already a win
And speaking of McConaughey.. man. I've said it before and I'll say it again, that guy can play literally anyone and absolutely crush it. At this point I'm convinced that if Matthew is in something, the chances of it being bad are basically zero. Like, statistically speaking. He just doesn't miss. This movie just reinforced that for me
The whole thing ended up being way more interesting than I expected. I went in thinking I was just gonna watch a dude survive in the woods or something, and instead I got this whole layered story about resistance and justice and all this historical stuff I actually ended up wanting to learn more about. I wasn't sitting there bored at all - it actually kept me hooked the whole time
Didn't know what I was getting into, ended up really liking it. McConaughey delivers like always, and honestly it's rare that I just pick something on a whim without overthinking it and actually end up satisfied. This one worked out
