Just made me like Targets (1968) more

“the crypt! it must be destroyed, and the dead with it.”

i’m admittedly a bit dense as i didn’t realize the imaginary film in targets was a real movie? like, i was a bit shocked when j found out it was this movie. it’s got some decent performances from both boris karloff and jack nicholson but this movie’s biggest claim to fame is the contributions it made to **bogdonavich’s targets **and seemingly has little merit as an actual movie.

it is still pretty fun though overall, makes for a really good, campy b-movie that you could watch with a few friends for a night in.

The insane production behind this movie is ten thousand times more interesting than the movie itself. Most of this was shot on a leftover set from The Raven over the course of two days without a script (Corman had an outline that was pretty much just a Baron in a spooky castle and nothing else at the time of shooting). A few months later, 4 separate directors stepped in for reshoots and extra footage (including a young Francis Ford Coppola), finally Corman came back to shoot another scene of a character straight up explaining the plot and twist because he thought it was all too “disconnected” and didn’t make sense. He was correct. However,

It’s kind of fun seeing the big sets and moody night scenes. Not a very exciting movie but as Jack Nicholson remarked about his experience on set, he had fun making it, it paid his rent and “they don’t make movies like The Terror anymore” which is too true. This was slapped together with a couple nickels, even more directors, and a dream. It also helped Bogdanovich’s Targets get made, so that’s another huge win.
