Affliction (1997) is honestly a bit bland. While it has the foundations of a strong film, it never quite reaches its potential for me. The first 90 minutes feel dull, with Willem Dafoe’s narration being the only consistently engaging element. I never became invested in the characters, their past trauma (which is only vaguely explored), or the mystery surrounding the shooting. The film wastes a lot of time meandering, and as a viewer, I found it more boring than engaging.

Aside from those actors, everyone in this movie (including Willam Dafoe) is giving a terrible performance. The story is a jumbled mess that can’t quite figure out what it wants to be. This is an underwhelming snooze fest.
