So Rain City is this neo-noir Seattle where everyone has mullets & yellow lipstick and it kinda looks like current Seattle.
People recite poetry in diners while jazz plays softly through smoke.
Its so stylish but very understated about it which is really cool- it could have easily been overblown and novelty but the was its done it makes it seem totally normal.
It has some smart dialogue and great performances, and uhh... birds eye cut scenes of an obviously molding clay/mixed media diarama of cars on brick roads? (Which i might add, hawke keeps in his apt).
The two main protagonists are really Georgia and Wanda. The men in this are all total dickbags. Which again, is another one of its more believable aspects. It is brimming with toxic masculinity.
Hawke, for example, rapes his friend Wanda after she helps him out and also told him multiple times they are just friends and she doesn’t want to be violated. Next he sets his sights on Georgia and scares her so bad she flees on foot with her baby to pike place market.
Coop is a classic gaslighter; initially refusing to let Georgia work because he knows she can do better without him, and because of his selfishness and misogyny Georgia and their baby suffer, while he spoils himself and cheats without remorse. And his hair gets more and more ridiculous as he decends deeper into a weird criminal knock-off watch enterprise.
Whats ultimately why I rated this so highly is because it has a little bit of everything; a villain with an eyepatch, a chris farley impersonator, 80’s does 40’s does futuristic fashion, Divine, and more than anything, a proper example of desperation.
